FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. — The High Point University men’s golf team finished second in the stroke play portion of the Big South Conference Championship on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers were led by Fred Roberts IV’s top-5 finish for the second consecutive year as he was named to the Big South All-Championship Team.
HPU will now advance into match play semifinals as the No. 2 seed versus third-seeded USC Upstate, which is slated for 8 a.m. Wednesday. The winner will go on to play in the match play championship — versus either top seed Charleston Southern or fourth seed Presbyterian — for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Through Three Rounds
Roberts IV battled into the top 5 after starting the tournament with 74 in this first round, but then shot back-to-back rounds of 68 to help secure the Panthers a spot in match play. He carded an impressive 13 birdies in stroke play as the team led all with 60 total birdies.
Grady Newton carded 73 to start out and nicely recovered with a 4-under-par 67 in round two. Newton shot a 1-over-par 72 in the final round and finished in the top 10.
Burch Harrison shot a 75 in the first round and ended day one with a 2-under-par 69. Harrison ended stroke play with a 1-over-par 72. Charlie Barr carded 73 to start the tournament and improved to finish round two with even par. Barr shot 72 to close out the tournament. Carter Pitcairn started with a 2-over-par 73 and shaved off two strokes to end day one with an even round two of 71. He finished with a 77 in round three.
