Gianna Singh, 16, wins her first tournament on Stephen Curry’s Underrated Golf Tour, showcasing her dedication and commitment.
ELK GROVE, Calif. — Gianna Singh first picked up golf at as a fun pastime at an early age. But as her passion for the game deepened, so did her commitment.
“Ever since I started golf, I’ve thought of golf as a fun game to play,” Singh said. “Once I got more serious about it, the discipline came in when I wanted to take my golf game to a high level.”
Now, the 16-year-old from Elk Grove is seeing the results of that discipline. Singh recently won her first tournament on the Underrated Golf Tour, a competition launched by NBA superstar Stephen Curry to give more access and opportunity to young golfers from all backgrounds.
“We get to play on championship courses. We get to travel like pros,” Singh said. “The expenses are paid for — hotel, food, transportation. Basically, all you have to do is get on a plane and play golf. That’s the best thing ever.”
But behind the perks is a demanding schedule. Singh, who formerly attended Pleasant Grove High School, made the decision to switch to homeschooling so she could keep up with the pace of tour life.
“This summer, I haven’t been home too much,” said Singh. “Right now, my travel schedule is three states in three weeks, so it’s pretty cool. I think I’ve traveled to at least six states this summer.”
Through it all, Singh takes pride in carrying her hometown with her.
“It’s an honor to represent Elk Grove, California, because it’s a small town,” Singh said. “Being able to represent your city and play well is a great honor.”
She admits the sacrifices are tough but believes they’re part of a bigger journey.
“I think all the sacrifice I’m making right now will pay off in the long run, because ever since I was little, my goal was to play professional golf,” Singh said. “I want to win a lot of tournaments when I turn pro and, hopefully, become one of the first Fijians in the nation in the Hall of Fame for women’s golf.”
