FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. – Charleston Southern took a runner-up finish at the Big South Championship on Wednesday at the Ocean Course in Fripp Island. The Buccaneers earned the top seed for match play with the lowest team score through stroke play and defeated #4 Presbyterian in the semifinals but fell to #3 USC Upstate in the finals.
The Buccaneers won the semifinals over the Blue Hose by a final score of 3-2. Griffin Tarver claimed his 3&2 over Trey Howard and Theodor Takman won his 4&2. The Blue Hose got wins at 4&3 over Layne Lambert and one up on the final hole over Dewi John. Alex North’s match was the clinching victory with it being the final match to tee off. For most of their matchup they were tied or within one stroke of each other. On 18, the final hole, North got a birdie to defeat Jeep Patrick, the Big South Individual Medalist, and move the squad to the finals to be played in the afternoon.
In the finals, it needed all the matches to be played out as well and went to playoff holes. The Bucs got wins from North with a 6&4 result and Tarver with his 3&2 win. The Spartans got their wins over Takman by 2&1 and Lambert by 3&2. USC Upstate’s Jas Sohal ended up going on to defeat John in a playoff hole after trailing by two holes with two left to play to clinch the championship and give the Spartans a 3-2 victory.
The result ends the 2025 season for the Buccaneers and marks the third time in the past four Big South Championships that they have advanced to the finals of match play. Charleston Southern won the title in 2022 and were the runners-up in 2023 as well.
