McIlroy -1, Thomas -1, Fleetwood +2 (5)
It’s all going on on the fifth hole.
Tommy Fleetwood is up first. His ball is sat down in the bunker and he has to swing hard and steep to get it up and over the lip of the trap. But that leaves him virtually powerless to stop the ball on the green. Instead his ball sails over it and, for the second time today, he’s over the back of the green.
Justin Thomas is next up and shows everybody how it’s done, chipping from the middle of the fairway and stopping the ball dead a few inches from the hole for a tap-in birdie.
Rory McIlroy, however, doesn’t quite get enough on his chip. It hops up the slope toward the pin but then runs out of juice, wobbles, and rolls back away from the hole.
That leaves a nasty 30ft putt up the slope … and he drains it! Wow. A superb effort. Fleetwood narrowly misses his and has to make do with a second bogey of the day, while Thomas taps in for a birdie.
