RENO, Nev. — Five top-40 finishes from San Diego Golf earned it a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Reno Regional on Wednesday afternoon to clinch the program’s fifth NCAA Championship berth and first since 2021.
The Toreros set forth their strongest round of the tournament in the final round with a team score of four under to clinch their spot in the 2025 NCAA Championship. As a team, they combined for scores of 295, 293, and 284 for a total of 872 strokes that was eight over par and good for fourth place in the 14-team field.
Sophomore Ryan Abuan led the way for the Toreros, shooting three consistent rounds of 72, 72, and 71 for a total of 215 strokes that was one-under par and tied for 11th place overall.
True freshman Cooper Humphreys carded San Diego’s next strongest performance, carding a two-over 218 after rounds of 75, 74, and 69 strokes to finish tied for 21st.
Senior Ian Maspat was just behind at T-33, turning in a six-over 222 (71, 79, 72), which was closely followed by sophomore You Seong Choi at T-36 (+7, 77, 74, 72, 223), and graduate Jaden Cantafio at T-39 (+9, 80, 73, 72, 225).
After their top-5 finish the Toreros will now head back home and up the road to Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California, to take part in the NCAA Championships as a team for the first time since 2021. Play will begin on Friday May 23, and lasts until Wednesday, May 28.
